Hi my lovely section, so tomorrow will be the day that we've been working so hard for.

I hope you guys will be confident and play with all the passion you've got.

Remember to follow Mr Lim, and to enjoy yourself when you are playing on stage with the band, well, and let your lips and subconscious mind do the rest.

Regardless of what happens tomorrow, I just want you to know that I'm really proud of all of you, for putting in so much effort and hard work.

Thank you for being part of my SYF journey.

Don't worry for tomorrow, just give your best and leave the stage with no regrets. I have absolute confidence in you.

Rest well kids & have fun tomorrow!

Take the silence as your paper, take your instruments as your brushes and let's paint the most amazing picture with the music we make.

Do me proud :)

Here are some tips to how to make your tone on the trombone better!

And here are some tips on how to extend your ranges on the trombone! You can see how our warm ups can help you extend your range!

This video doesn't show much, but just remember you can buzz all the time! So practice buzzing properly, and you'll sound nice on your trombone!

There are a lot more videos on Youtube, but these are the few I managed to find and thought was quite useful! Please look through that paper I gave on the weakness that you need to improve on too!

Work hard! Work smart! We are all meant to be great trombonist with INFINITE POTENTIAL waiting to be unleashed!

:)

Love,
Emily

Hello section!

Here are some websites you guys can look at and try to improve, now and in the future. Everyone should read everything but I've indicated who die die must read the articles! You can google more yourself. Must read okay I woke up early today just to google this for you!

You guys know your main problems! Emily-- I think you can do well for blending and playing together, but you don't have enough soloistic sound (when trombones have solos, it's usually the loud kind but your tone is a little too mellow for that! must train to be versatile.). Lynette-- posture! embouchure, the way you buzz, tone/air is unstable on days. Justine-- airy buzzing (causing tone to be way too mellow), relaxing (!!). Lilian-- airy buzzing, breathing, tone and some articulation! Yukee-- using throat, embouchure and the way you buzz.

I know this post sounds very sad and depressing because I've written all your weaker points (dear new SL and ASL please take good notice of this!) but! You guys are playing pretty well already! I spoke to the Fudan first chair (aka something like the SL) and he only started playing when he entered Fudan. Which means he probably only played max 2 years. If he can have such nice sound, so can you guys! Girls are naturally weaker and it's harder for us to support the sound, which means we must work even harder (: Just work hard, don't be too frustrated! Practice makes perfect :D

Hi section! :D

This is kind of late and it has been 26/27 hours since our concert. I am totally feeling the post-concert blues and withdrawal symptoms. And my right arm is dying from muscle ache, thanks to the countless glissandos in our repertoire (I went to count and I had to play 18 glissandos in total for the entire concert, including those in Into The New World haha)

I really wanted to text y'all like Jiahui and Emily (thank you dears) but 1. thanks to concert prep and all my phone bills have officially gone sky high 2. I went for supper with jaclyn and michelle and reached home at 12am._. and most important of all, 3. It isn't until now that I've consolidated my thoughts on the concert. I (actually I'm sure many of us) floated around my house the whole day not really doing anything because I cannot believe concert is already over. So sorry if you were expecting my SMS but hey at least I texted you all to read this post right!

Anyway (that's a lot of random stuff on top, but I'm getting to the main point now 8D) I just wanted to say that I'm really proud of you guys!!! You've worked really really hard for this concert and I know sometimes I can be a little harsh on you guys but thank you for working so hard despite so. I'm not a great SL, but seeing all of you grow and learn within this past 10 months is really something I take pride in, especially in these few months of preparation for concert. I have no words to say how thankful Jiahui and I are that you've made our last concert with nycb a fulfilling and memorable one <3

My memory of playing in the concert is in bits and pieces, really, but I can remember a few moments when I was really happy with the music we were playing.

During Hobart Centennial, Jiahui and Yukee-- your accents during the rit. part at bar 99(?) were super awesome. During Simple Gifts 3rd movement, Emily and Justine-- the part where only 1st trombones come in and we have to play long notes really softly, the tone and tuning were so nice <3 During Seventh Night of July, Lynette and Justine-- I think that was the nicest I've heard you guys play the fast part on the 3rd page, the tone was exactly the blasty tone the part needed. And Justine, thank you for playing the high G near the end of Seventh Night :D And lastly, during Carribean Hideaway, I was sitting next to Lilian and Emily so I could hear them really clearly, and I could really feel y'all giving your might to play the piece. Thank you for creating all these memories for me; it is these little parts of the concert that makes me want to relive it once again. (It's like how I can never get over how the entire band breathed together just before the repeating of the first few bars in Singapore Flyer, and that super in tune high F in Flight of the Piasa during SYF'11)

With no doubt, this concert has made it to my list of most memorable experiences in nycb, and I hope it has made it to your list too. Thank you for making this concert happen, for dedicating your time to practice even though the period before concert was really horrible with BTs and all (:

let's go trombones! (:

<3 yuxin!

Hello Section! :D

Things Mr Koh taught us on Thursday:

1. Posture
You should be sitting forward in your chair with your back straight, one foot slightly in front of the other (usually your right leg). Trombone should be held up, nearing 90degrees.

2. Breathing
Breathe deeply. Your chest should expand outwards, not upwards.
-- Do not stop the flow of air. In other words, after you breathe in, do not hold the air in before you blow it out. Always breathe the full count.
-- Do not crescendo or decrescendo when letting the air out.
-- Maximize the inhalation and exhalation of air.

Do breathing exercises such as breathe in 4 beats, breathe out 4 beats; breathe in 1 beat, breathe out 7 beats.

3. Mouthpiece buzzing
Listen to a note (such as low B-flat) then buzz it on your mouthpiece.
Play a simple tune on your mouthpiece, preferably one with small pitch changes and long notes.

4. Long tones
Play the scale (going downwards) and play the first note again before playing each note. (Like the long note exercise, just not in chromatics)

5. Lip Slurs (this is kind of. self explanatory.)

Remember to practice your scales + Bring home your mouthpiece to practice whenever you can ^^

yuxin!
